What’s In Your (Heavenly) Wallet?

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ~Matthew 6:18-21

Okay, today I saw this passage from an intentional, deliberate, diligent (yep, my favorite words!) perspective. It’s easy to “set aside” or “lay up” earthly treasure – you know, “saving for a rainy day”. Most people think it very wise to do so.

How much more wise, then, to do so from an eternal point of value?

Notice that this passage does not say, “While you are storing up treasures on earth”. (Just an interesting point to ponder there – hmm.) Okay, sorry, got shiny there for a minute.

It’s easy to, from a worldly perspective, say, “Okay, if I earn this money now, I can set back some for savings, so I will earn what I can, while I am able, and save it.”

I would like to challenge you to apply this same principle to your eternal “bank account”. As you look at your day, your circumstances, your various opportunities to witness and minister, you can reason to say, “If I minister to this person, or witness to that person, or give to this person, or forgive someone who really hurt me….(you get the idea), I will be laying up my treasure in heaven.”

I’m not talking about storing up for your own sake, but for the sake of others. As in an investment or money, investing our time to witness to someone who needs the Lord, benefits them, but it also benefits us, in that it keeps us focused on an eternal perspective, making us remember what is really important, and what is not.

So, what will you deposit into your bank account today? What will you deposit into your heavenly storehouse today? If one drastically outweighs the other, I truly hope that it is your heavenly storehouse that reaps the abundance!

Because….remember that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also!
