“Change Your Hearts Before the Lord”

This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem:

“Plow up the hard ground of your hearts!

Do not waste your good seed among thorns.

O people of Judah and Jerusalem, surrender your pride and power.

Change your hearts before the Lord, or my anger will burn like an unquenchable fire because of all your sins.

Jeremiah 4:3-5

Oh how this is true of America today!

I found it interesting to note that the Hebrew translation of this phrase “change your heart before the Lord” is actually, “circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart”.

Why is it that we think that we can “fool God” about what is in our hearts.  When we know that He sees us for what we are, in our deepest part.  As long as we have this mindset – “I’m good – I’m “doing” everything right, I look like a Christian!”, we are only fooling ourselves, and, sadly, distancing ourselves from the only One Who truly makes life worth living at all.  When we do this we are missing out on the most passionate, intimate Love of our lives!  How sad.

But so many times, we would rather “settle” for this “image” of “Christianity”, than to bare our hearts to the surgical steel of the Sword of God.

When we come to understand God for Who He is, we truly desire to become like Him.  When we truly desire to become like Him, He enables us to apply His Word to our lives.  This process can be “painful” at first, but it is so necessary!  Without this “cutting away” of ourselves, we can’t even begin to look anything like our Precious Savior!

In studying a bit about the process of cleaning severe wounds, I was interested to see that when a severe wound has been left to itself when infection has set in, will not heal.  Instead the infection continue to eat away at the “healthy” skin nearby, and eventually ends up poisoning the patients whole body.  That is exactly what sin, pride and arrogance does in our lives.

In order for a doctor to treat a wound that is extremely infected, they must cut away the infected tissue, so that it no longer “feeds” on the healthy tissue.  This is a painful process, I’m sure, but a necessary one.  Without this type of procedure, death is the result, so it would be much better to face the temporary pain of the cleaning and cutting away of the infection, as painful as it is, and be rid of it to be whole once again.

In the same way, we must apply the Surgical Steel of God’s Word to our “infected” hearts.  We must remove all that is infected by sin, pride, and self-will.  Only when this is done, can we begin to be “whole” again!

It’s a deliberate choice we must make.  We each have a Bible readily available for us to read constantly.  Yes, the process is painful, but oh the joy when we finally turn from “removing the dead and infected tissue” to “applying life-giving ‘vitamins'” for continued supplement!

So, open your Bible, and open your heart to God’s Master Hand, prepare to be made into something you never thought possible!
